Privacy policy
Last updated 13 October 2026
SymJam is a shared listening room: people take turns as DJ, vote on tracks and chat while everyone hears the same song. This policy explains what SymJam collects, why, who it is shared with and how to have it deleted. SymJam is for people aged 13 and over.
Contact: claeyskerune@gmail.com.
What we collect
- Identity and profile: your email address (from Google sign-in; guests have none), display name, avatar look, the id of your active browser tab, and when your account was created and last updated.
- Activity: your playlists, queue items, the tracks you played as DJ, your votes and playlist adds ("grabs"), chat messages (the last 100 per room are kept), room presence, room memberships, bans and mutes, and wallpaper images you upload to rooms you own.
- Session: a sealed cookie that keeps you signed in for 30 days.
- Diagnostics: your user id appears in our hosting provider's server logs and in error telemetry.
- YouTube data: video ids, titles, channel names, thumbnails and durations that we fetch through the YouTube API Services, stored so playlists, queues and rooms can show them.
We use this data only to run SymJam. We do not sell it.
SymJam may show display ads in the room interface. Ads never appear on, over or inside the YouTube player and are never tied to specific YouTube videos. Before ads go live we will name the ad provider and its cookies here and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
YouTube API Services
SymJam uses YouTube API Services to search for videos and read their metadata, and plays them with the embedded YouTube player. By using SymJam you are also bound by the YouTube Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.
The YouTube player loads from www.youtube.com. YouTube may set cookies and collect data about your viewing, as described in the Google Privacy Policy. SymJam does not control this.
We store YouTube video metadata only for videos that are in use, and we refresh it from YouTube at least every 30 days. Videos that nobody references any more, and old search results, are deleted after 30 days. If YouTube no longer returns a video, we clear its title and show it as "no longer on YouTube".
SymJam only reads public YouTube data and does not request access to your YouTube account. If you ever granted a Google application access to your data, you can revoke it at security.google.com/settings/security/permissions.
Woots, hype and listener counts are SymJam's own numbers. They are not YouTube data.
Cookies and local storage
- nuxt-session (cookie): keeps you signed in. Strictly necessary, valid for 30 days and renewed while you are active.
- YouTube cookies: set by YouTube when the player loads. We ask for your acknowledgement the first time you enter a room.
- Local storage:
symjam:audio(volume and sound settings),symjam:view(room view),symjam:video-background,symjam:chat-system(whether system chat messages are shown) andsymjam:youtube-notice(that you saw the cookie notice). Session storage:symjam:entered.
Guest accounts
You can use SymJam as a guest without an email address. A guest account has the same data as any other account, minus the email, and is tied to a cookie in your browser that stays valid for 30 days and renews while you are active. If you clear your cookies or switch browsers you cannot get the account back; we cannot recover it for you.
- Guest accounts that are idle for 30 days are deleted, together with the rooms they own.
- You can delete a guest account at any time from your profile.
- To limit abuse we keep a hashed version of your IP address (not the address itself) to cap how many guest accounts one network can create per day. Guest creation only works from the SymJam page. The legitimate interest is protecting the service and its YouTube quota. The hash is deleted after 7 days.
You can later choose "Keep your account" to attach a Google account to your guest account.
Who we share data with
- Google, for sign-in, and YouTube, for search and playback.
- The server that hosts SymJam, and Neon, which hosts the database.
- Other people in your rooms see your display name, avatar look, chat messages, votes and DJ plays. Your email is never shown to them.
Deleting your data
Use "Delete my account" on your profile page and your account and its data are deleted. You can also email claeyskerune@gmail.com and we delete it within 7 days. Rooms you own are handed to the member who has been there longest or deleted if nobody else is in them. Plays you made stay in the room history without your name.
Your rights
You can ask for access to, correction of or deletion of your data at any time through the address above.
Changes
We will update this page when something changes and adjust the date at the top.
